Look at the dismal cell that Lucy has to spend over 60% of her life in due to Edmonton's cold climate. The painted trees highlight how unnatural Lucy's enclosure is. Her indoor area is very tiny. Imagine speanding 39 years living in this prison.

At almost 41 years of age Lucy is running out of time. Elephants in zoos usually succumb to zoo induced medical ailments by their mid 40's. Lucy currently suffers from obesity, arthritis, foot disease, stereotypy (a zoo induced psychological ailment characterized by repetitive swaying, rocking and stepping caused from loneliness, boredom and mental anguish) pressure sores and a mysterious respiratory ailment. All of these medical ailments can be attributed to her unnatural and solitary existence at the Edmonton Valley zoo.

Lucy must be retired to a warm climate sanctuary in the US asap. The funds are there to cover the costs and experts are waiting to transport her in a state of the art transport vehicle. Lucy needs a second independent medical opinion as to the safety of transporting her. We know elephants who are older and sicker are transported all the time so it is likely a species expert without a financial interest in keeping Lucy in a zoo, would agree that transport is best. Unfortunately the zoo will not allow this. We need our citizens and city council to stand up for Lucy before it's too late!
