A young man named John Roulstone happened to be visiting the school that day and was inspired by the incident. Mr. Roulstone returned to the school the next day with the original first three stanzas of the nursery rhyme written. There is still some debate about the original lyrics to Mary Had A Little Lamb. Some people think that John Roulstone only wrote the first four lines. Sara Josepha Hale is considered to have written the other 12 lines. Some people also believe that Sarah Josepha Hale wrote the entire poem herself. Mary Had A Little Lamb’s Place In History The school discussed in the nursery rhyme is believed to be the Redstone School in Sudbury Massachusetts. There is a statue which represents the Mary Had A Little Lamb rhyme in Sudbury’s town center. Famous inventor and American icon Henry Ford actually purchased the Redstone School and relocated it to a different property. Another tie that Mary Had A Little Lamb has to American history is it's connection to the great inventor Thomas Edison. The earliest recording of this nursery rhyme dates back to 1878 and was recently recovered by 3D imaging technology in 2012.
