In the late 1800's, a young student named Mary Sawyer decided to bring her pet lamb to school. Of course, this spurred excitement among the students and staff to occur. A young man named John Roulstone happened to be visiting the school that day and was inspired by the incident. Mr. Roulstone returned to the school the next day with the original first three stanzas of the nursery rhyme written. There is still some debate about the original lyrics to Mary Had A Little Lamb. Some people also believe that Sarah Josepha Hale wrote the entire poem herself.
