Here are some facts about Mary Had A Little Lamb you may not have known. History Of This Nursery Rhyme Song Mary Had A Little Lamb is rare in the fact that it is backed by an actual story that historians can confirm. In the late 1800's, a young student named Mary Sawyer decided to bring her pet lamb to school. Of course, this spurred excitement among the students and staff to occur. A young man named John Roulstone happened to be visiting the school that day and was inspired by the incident. Mr. Roulstone returned to the school the next day with the original first three stanzas of the nursery rhyme written. There is still some debate about the original lyrics to Mary Had A Little Lamb. Some people think that John Roulstone only wrote the first four lines. Sara Josepha Hale is considered to have written the other 12 lines. Some people also believe that Sarah Josepha Hale wrote the entire poem herself. Mary Had A Little Lamb’s Place In History The school discussed in the nursery rhyme is believed to be the Redstone School in Sudbury Massachusetts. There is a statue which represents the Mary Had A Little Lamb rhyme in Sudbury’s town center. Famous inventor and American icon Henry Ford actually purchased the Redstone School and relocated it to a different property. Another tie that Mary Had A Little Lamb has to American history is it's connection to the great inventor Thomas Edison. Mary Had A Little Lamb was the original recording on Edison’s new phonograph in 1877. The earliest recording of this nursery rhyme dates back to 1878 and was recently recovered by 3D imaging technology in 2012. Mary had a little lamb Song Lyrics: Mary had a little lamb, little lamb, little lamb. Mary had a little lamb, it`s fleece was white as snow. And everywhere that Mary went, Mary went, Mary went, and everywhere that Mary went The lamb was sure to go. It followed her to school one day school one day, school one day. It followed her to school one day, which was against the rules. It made the children laugh and play, laugh and play, laugh and play, it made the children laugh and play To see a lamb in school. And so the teacher turned it out, turned it out, turned it out. And so the teacher turned it out, but still it lingered near, And waited patiently about, patiently, patiently And waited patiently about Till Mary did appear. "Why does the lamb love Mary so?" Mary so? Mary so? "Why does the lamb love Mary so," the eager children cry. "Why, Mary loves the lamb, you know." lamb, you know, the lamb, you know, "Why, Mary loves the lamb, you know," the teacher did reply. Thank you for watching the video.
